BIKE

Bikeshare is easily-accessible, reliable, and affordable. DC is a top ranked bike-friendly community boasting 160 miles of lanes and trails for you to explore the city on two wheels.

TRANSIT

Try public transit to get the true DC experience! Metrorail services 98 stations across DC, Maryland, and Virginia. Other options include the Metrobus, MARC/AMTRAK/VRE train, or DC Streetcar.

WALK

Our nation’s capital is the 6th most walkable city in the US, making it easy to venture out by foot. Walking helps you get familiar with the neighborhoods and become more a part of the DC community.

Road Closures, Detours, and Extended Service


Road Closures: Get updates on all road closures from the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) at mpdc.dc.gov/alerts.

Metrobus Detours & Delays: Some bus routes will see detours and delays during events, especially the parade on June 7. Additional buses may be added to certain routes to keep schedules on time. Check for service at wmata.com/metropulse.

Metrorail Extended Hours/Service: On the last weekend of World Pride (June 6-8), Metro is increasing service with additional hours; Friday 5am-2am, Saturday 6am-2am, Sunday 6am-Midnight. Metro is also extending the Yellow Line to the end of the line at Greenbelt on Saturday and Sunday. Learn more.

Metrorail

Metrorail is DC’s regional rapid transit system with six lines (orange, blue, green, red, silver, yellow) and 98 stations.

Metrorail fares vary by time of day and the distance between stations. ($2.25 – $6.75). Pay using SmarTrip®. 

1, 3, and 7 day passes are available for Metrorail & bus.

Extended Metro Hours & Service June 6-8

Friday: 5am-2am

Metrobus

Metrobus is the region’s bus system spanning Virginia, Maryland, and DC. Metrobus fare is $2.25 per ride. Pay using SmarTrip®. 

1, 3, and 7 day passes are available for Metrobus & rail. 

Transfer Discounts: 

-Free, unlimited transfers on Metrobus within a 2-hour period.

-$2.25 discount when transferring to Metrorail within a 2-hour period.

-Metrobus fare is free when transferring from Metrorail within a 2-hour period.

DC Streetcar

DC Streetcar runs free, daily trips along the H Street NE Corridor and Benning Road from Union Station to Oklahoma Avenue.

Capital Bikeshare

Capital Bikeshare is the region’s bikeshare program. Check out a classic bike or e-bike and return it to any station. With over 700 stations in Virginia, Maryland, and DC.  it’s easy to get where you need to go. 

Choose from a single ride, day pass, or 30 day membership. Pay in the app or at a station kiosk.

Reagan National Airport (DCA)

Located just three miles south of Washington, DC, the Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport is the nearest commercial airport to the capital city and serves the metro DC area. It is directly accessible by Metrorail’s Yellow and Blue lines and Metrobus, as well as a multitude of other shuttle and rideshare options.

Baltimore-Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport may be located about 30 miles east of DC, but don’t let the distance fool you—there are plenty of affordable transportation options available.

The biggest and busiest airport in the metro DC area, the Washington Dulles International Airport is located 45 minutes west of DC in Virginia. It’s directly accessible by Metrorail’s Silver line, as well as a multitude of other shuttle and rideshare options.

TRAVEL SMART WITH SMARTRIP®

A SmarTrip® card is an easy-to-use, rechargeable card used to pay Metrorail, Metrobus, and local bus system fares. Fares start at $2.25. Unlimited passes are available for 1-day, 3-days, and 7-days.

  • Purchase

    You can plan ahead and buy a SmarTrip® card online with any major debit or credit card. Or, you can purchase a card at any Metrorail station or select sales location.

  • Go Digital

    Download the SmarTrip® app or add your SmarTrip® card to your digital wallet. Once you add the card to your digital wallet, your physical card will no longer work. 

  • Tap

    If riding Metrorail, tap your card on the target at the fare gate upon entering and exiting. If riding Metrobus, tap your card on the farebox at the front of the bus only as you enter.

  • Load

    You can add value to your SmarTrip® card and check your balance at any Metrorail station. Or, you can create an account to manage your card online. 

  • Etiquette

    Brush up on Metrorail and bus etiquette so you can travel like a local and have a smooth ride.
