Slug Lines and i-66 Incentives for loudoun County Commuters

by Korrea Johnston

With the launch of new rush-hour tolls on I-66 Inside the Beltway that began in December 2017, Loudoun County Commuter Services is supporting commuters who travel into the District using an alternative to driving alone with a new incentive program, I Share 66

Commuters who sign up for a vanpool, carpool, or take the Loudoun County Transit Commuter Bus will receive special incentives for reducing single-occupancy vehicles:

  • Vanpool – Start a new vanpool and Loudoun County Commuter Services will pay $500 towards your expenses for the first three months of operation.
  • Carpool – Start a new carpool and each participant (driver and passengers) will receive a $100 gasoline card.
  • Commuter Bus – Start riding today and Loudoun County Commuter Services will send you a $100 SmarTrip card for the first three months.

Another option for commuting along I-66 is Sluglines. Slugging is a unique form of commuting, sometimes referred to as “Instant Carpooling” or “Casual Carpooling”. This organized system has specific pick-up and drop-off areas where commuters can pick-up passengers to meet the required 2-person high occupancy vehicle (HOV) minimum.  The best part about slugging is that it’s FREE!

Here’s how it works:

  1. The driver pulls into one of the many known locations for Sluglines, where riders line up.
  2. The driver holds up a sign or rolls down the window to call out his/her destination.
  3. Riders first in line heading to the driver’s location proceed into the car and off they go.

New this year, passengers and drivers can use the Sluglines mobile app. Passengers can check-in to show their availability and drivers can find real-time status to navigate to pick up locations where there are more passengers.
