SafeTrack Surge 10: More than 3 weeks of closures for Red Line Riders
by Korrea Johnston
SafeTrack Surge 10 is returning to the District with a full closure of Metrorail’s Red Line between Fort Totten and NoMa-Galladuet stations from Saturday, October 29 to Tuesday, November 22. For 25 days, Metrorail service will be dramatically reduced and two stations – Brookland and Rhode Island – will be closed. Click here to listento the previously recorded SafeTrack Surge10 Employer Webinar.
District officials expect heavy traffic on area roadways and extreme crowding on Metrorail. This will be the longest SafeTrack surge to affect the District. Metro expects this closure will impact approximately 138,000 commuters. Commuters are encouraged to use the Green Line as an alternate route between Fort Totten and Downtown DC (via Gallery Place).
Here are 7 tips to help your organization maintain business continuity and make your employees’ commutes easier:
1. Launch a Pilot Telework Program
Telework offers one of the most effective ways to respond to the unique challenges of SafeTrack. This is the perfect time to consider launching a pilot telework program. Let goDCgo assist you today with implementing a telework program or providing sample telework policies. Contact us today for your complimentary consultation. Use the code “goDCgo” at Flow Yoga’s telework center and you’ll receive an additional 15% off one-day visits and 5-visit passes.
2. Become a Corporate Capital Bikeshare Member
Capital Bikeshare is one of the most convenient ways to navigate around SafeTrack. Sign up for our Capital Bikeshare Corporate Membership program today to purchase annual memberships for $50 per employee – which include unlimited 30-minute bike rides. Email us today to receive 24-hour free trial passes and learn how you can get started.
3. Promote Carpool and Vanpool Options
Carpooling and vanpooling are win-win commute options for both employees and employers. Did you know your employees with long commutes can use their pre-tax commuter benefits to save up to $255 per month by vanpooling? Help them save even further by encouraging them to participate in
CarpoolNow and in regional incentive programs for first-time ‘pool commuters. We can assist with ride matching, help locate carpool or vanpool priority parking spaces and more. Contact the goDCgo Employer Services team today!
4. Share MARC train schedules as a back-up option
Red Line commuters coming from Maryland should consider taking the MARC train, which offers express rail service from various points throughout the state. The Brunswick Line (via Silver Spring) and Camden Line (via Greenbelt) drop commuters downtown at Union Station. The fare is between $5-$12 dollars one-way; commuters can purchase a ticket at their local Commuter Store or MTA Commuter Direct.
5. Metrobus and Supplemental Shuttle Options
Metrobus and some of the local bus systems are providing extra, and in some cases free, service to accommodate more passengers. There will be free Metro bus shuttles available for you to take at Fort Totten, Brookland, Rhode Island Ave and NoMa-Gallaudet Metro stations. There will be increased all day service for the S9 bus via 16th Street and increased peak hour service on the L1 bus – Connecticut, P6 bus – Rhode Island/Eckington/Anacostia, and 80 bus – North Capitol bus lines.
6. Use Car2GO and be multi-modal
Right now CAR2GO is offering a limited special for SafeTrack Surge 10. Encourage your employees to use the code “SAFETRACK” to sign-up for a free membership and $10 of drive credit. This offer is only valid for new members. There are no monthly or yearly fees so this is an opportunity for people to get in on having a lifetime membership without paying anything.
7. Share Go-to Transportation Apps
Having a go-to transportation app is essential, especially when you’re looking for alternative ways around town to avoid SafeTrack delays. Share these helpful transportation apps with your employees today:
