Putting People First: Open Streets in DC

by Samantha Huff

Can you imagine car-free streets? The District is making this dream a reality! Join us for the first-ever Open Streets event in DC on Saturday, October 5 from 10am to 2pm. That’s right — no cars, just people, stretching along nearly 3 miles of Georgia Avenue NW between Barry Place NW and Missouri Ave NW. Bring your furry friends, bikes, skates, scooters, balls, jump ropes, and most importantly yourselves to this FREE event!

Open Streets is a program that temporarily closes streets to vehicular traffic and opens them exclusively to people for healthy activities suitable for all ages and abilities. DC’s inaugural Open Streets should inspire us to think differently about our streets by encouraging physical activity, creating recreational opportunities, and fostering community building and education.

How do you want to experience Open Streets DC? Whether you want to be physical with play and exercise or take the recreational route and shop and eat at local businesses, there’s something for everyone! A variety of fitness classes will be available like aerobics and Zumba, or you could go for a walk to explore the hidden gems and hotspots in and around the Shaw neighborhood. Local vendors will be selling a variety of food, drinks, collectibles, and other goodies for you to enjoy. Did we mention this is a kid-friendly event? For the first time in the District, the whole family can play safely in the street!

goDCgo encourages you to get there by walking, biking, or taking public transit. Besides, there’s no cars allowed! Open Streets is a time to encourage sustainability and celebrate all of our city’s transportation options. Save-the-date so you don’t miss out on the family-fun and see how you’ll be inspired to support the community.
