Free City Cycling Class and Community Rides for CaBi Members!

by Korrea Johnston

Spring is in the air, which means the Washington Area Bicyclists Association (WABA) cycling classes have finally returned! And in even better news, the City Cycling classes and Community Rides are FREE to Capital Bikeshare members!

WABA classes teach biking for transportation, fun, and fitness. They offer sessions for adults of all skill levels in Washington, DC, Arlington, Alexandria, and Montgomery County. All WABA instructors are certified by the League of American Bicyclists so you’re guaranteed to be in excellent hands. All class participants are required to wear a helmet, even while riding a personal bike.

  • Learn to Ride: This three-hour class is for adults who have never ridden a bike before and want to start now. You’ll learn the basics of balancing, gliding and pedaling on a bike. Instructors will take you through a progressive curriculum, with the goal of getting you on two pedals by the end of the session. A bike and helmet are included with registration.
  • Basic Skills Clinic: Sign up for this two-hour clinic if you have recently taken an Adult Learn to Ride class and would like to continue practicing basic skills like starting and stopping, turning, weaving, and gradual braking. Bicycle and helmet are provided but you may bring your own.
  • City Cycling: If you already know how to ride a bike, but want to build your confidence riding on trails or traffic, this class is for you! You’ll practice bike handling skills and learn strategies for riding on different types of streets and trails, then go for a ride to practice your new skills. Sign up to take your riding to the next level.
  • Community Rides: WABA’s Community Education Ride series is an inclusive space for riders of all ages and levels to explore the city. Each ride tackles a different topic that urban riders use to get around the region. Community Rides are a fun, friendly and low stress way to experience bike routes and trails throughout the DC metro area. Community Rides depart from all over the place and are designed to accommodate different distances and interests. Check out the schedule and find the ride that is right for you!

You must be 18 or older to participate in the Adult Learn to Ride, Basic Skills Clinic, and Confident City Cycling classes. Children and adolescents are welcome to participate in Community Rides as long as a parent or guardian is present on the ride. Bring your family or friends and make it a group outing! Sign up to join WABA for a morning or afternoon dedicated to building your biking skills, confidence, and community.
