On Tuesday July 15, the District of Columbia City Council unanimously approved a suite of sustainability initiatives and changes under the "Sustainable D.C. Omnibus Act of 2014", and today Mayor Gray signed the bill into law. Included in this new law is a measure that will ensure that all commuters who travel to DC for work will have access to transportation benefits from their employer. Working with employers to provide transit benefits to employees in the District will help reduce rush hour demands on our roadways and expand opportunities for public transit while helping reduce employer payroll costs and improve employee retention.
This innovative measure, “Reducing Single Occupancy Vehicle Use by Encouraging Transit Benefits”, calls for all District employers with more than 20 employees to offer a transit benefit program by January 1, 2016. That benefit can take the form of a pre-tax election transportation fringe benefit, an employer-paid benefit program of direct subsidy or an employee-provided transportation option at no cost to the employee.
